Dr. Haran
receives NASA EPSCoR award
Dr. Shivan Haran, Mechanical Engineering, in conjunction with
Dr. Guoliang Huang, Systems Engineering, University of Arkansas at
Little Rock, has received a NASA
EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Development Planning and Preparatory
(RID P and P) award for "Real-Time Damage Detection in Sandwich
Honeycomb Panels by Using Complementary Vibration and Wave
Propagation Approaches." The objectives of this project are to
develop a new quantitative damage detection technique and to conduct
a comprehensive study of the dynamic behavior of honeycomb composite
panels, which have surface-bonded actuators/sensors. The project
will further determine design parameters to enable this system to
reach its specified performance, particularly at extreme loadings
such as very high temperatures (300° F). The project is expected to
lead to the development of a new reliable online self-monitoring
technique for large space structures with integrated
actuators/sensors. Such research addresses the need for safe and
reliable structural health monitoring in space, one of the key
objectives of NASA’s aviation safety programs.
