ASU professor appointed to new Governor's Commission
Dr. Jerry Farris
, associate dean, Sciences and Mathematics, has been appointed to the new Governor's Commission on Global Warming, created by the 86th General Assembly. The Commission will study the issues and potential impact of global warming in Arkansas and work with state agencies to reduce contaminants that contribute to global warming. The 21-member group also includes State Rep. Joan Cash of Jonesboro and Kevan Inboden of Jonesboro City Water and Light.

Center for Teaching and Learning offers workshop
The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning will sponsor a workshop, "Teaching That Promotes Learning," on Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Grand Hall, Fowler Center. Dr. Maryellen Weimer, Penn State University, will offer an interactive presentation based on her book, "Learning-Centered Teaching." Duplicate sessions will be offered from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m.-3:30 p.m. To register, contact Patti Reed, ext. 3057.

Lakeport Plantation Heritage Site Grand Opening slated
The Lakeport Plantation, one of Arkansas' premier historic structures, will officially open as a museum and educational center Friday, Sept. 28, during public activities. The highlight of the Sept. 28 Grand Opening will be a ceremony and presentations at 3:15 p.m. on the Lakeport lawn. Other events include a Symposium, a Plantation Luncheon (advance reservations required), demonstrations of restoration techniques, and presentations of research on African-American history at Lakeport. To reserve a place at the Sept. 28 luncheon, contact Paula Miles at ext. 2803 by Friday, Sept. 21.

Students showing appreciation for faculty and staff
Leaders from several student organizations will be visiting faculty and staff in their offices this week to present buttons expressing the students' appreciation. This is a initiative spearheaded by Morgan Pippin and Jerome Thomas of the SGA as a way of supporting Faculty and Staff Appreciation activities.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day tickets, t-shirts
Tickets and t-shirts should be picked up in the Administration Building lobby through tomorrow, between 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m. If you are unable to pick up your items at these times, contact Nanya French at ext. 3030 to arrange otherwise.

Science Flicks continue with 'The China Syndrome'
ASU's Department of Biological Sciences continues its series of "Science Flicks" Thursday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m., in Lab Sciences 219. The film, "The China Syndrome," will be shown, and a panel discussion will follow. Panelists for this film are Dr. David Gilmore, Biology, and Dr. Andrew Sustich, Dean of the Graduate School.

Mascot Selection Steering Committee expanded
Chancellor Robert L. Potts announced Friday that he is expanding the Mascot Selection Steering Committee to ensure that all university constituencies have greater input into the process. The Web site for collecting suggested mascot names will be open through Oct. 31. Each group will select eight to 12 favorite names from that list by Nov. 10.
