ASU scientists
receive $12 million Dept. of Defense contract
ASU received the news the end of last
week that the 2005 Department of Defense appropriations bill which
included a $12 million contract for ASU scientists was signed by
President George W. Bush. The contract includes two projects which
will be conducted by Dr. Susan D. Allen, Research and
Academic Affairs; Dr. Robyn Hannigan, Chemistry; Dr. Bruce
Johnson, Physics; Dr. William
Burns, Chemistry; Dr. Scott Reeve, Chemistry; and Dr. Sergey Kudryshov,
Physics. The scientists will work with two other universities to research and create remote detection techniques for
minute levels of nuclear, chemical and biological substances.
One
of the programs, SHADES (Standoff Hazardous Agent Detection Equipment
System) will be used to detect nuclear and chemical particles for the
location of weapons of mass destruction.
The
other program, SSRID (Standoff Sensor for Radionuclide Identification)
will detect particles to determine contamination levels from such
weapons. Read more in the NewsPage release.

faculty members' recent achievements in Campus News.
Faculty Orientation begins Monday
On Monday, Aug. 16, the two-day Orientation for new
faculty will get underway, conducted by the Office of Research and
Academic Affairs. The agenda and other orientation information
is on the New
Faculty Orientation website. Fall Faculty Conference
follows on Wednesday, Aug. 18. Welcome to all new faculty!
Museum to open exhibit of women's art
The ASU Museum will host an exhibit opening
for "Originals! Arkansas Women Artists, 2004-05," with a reception
this Sunday, Aug. 15, from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. The Arkansas
State Committee of The National Museum of Women in the Arts sponsors
the exhibition. Everyone is welcome to attend. The
exhibit will remain on exhibit in the main gallery through Sept. 24.
Scout University needs your
help on Oct. 2
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
from across Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri will be coming to ASU
on Saturday, Oct. 2, to participate in Scout University 2004.
Faculty and staff are invited to share their expertise with these
young women and men. If you would be interested in teaching a badge
workshop, please contact Dawn Tucker at 972-3362 or via email at
dtucker@astate.edu. If you
don't have a particular badge you would like to teach, but are
interested in helping, your assistance is still needed. You can be
matched with your interest areas. This is a great opportunity to
showcase all the talent at ASU as well as helping to recruit future
students.
Parking permits will
expire next week; new ones available
The 2003-04 parking permits
will expire Aug. 15. Parking Services wants everyone to know that
they are available anytime for purchase. And, once you have one,
just place it in your vehicle and it goes into effect. Also, as new
parking lots are being constructed, a few changes are taking place
that will affect members of the faculty, staff and students. Parking
Services will be phasing out the green curb painting to designate
faculty parking places. An example of this is the new lot west of
Education/Communications and south of the Dean B. Ellis Library. The
new lot contains more than 280 spaces and is paved, striped, and
lighted and will have an emergency telephone. It also contains new
signage to indicate the type of designated parking spaces. Instead
of the traditional green painted curbs to indicate faculty parking,
metal signs will mark the beginning and the end of designated
parking. In addition, metal signs will indicate visitor parking and
disability parking. Student designated parking will be unsigned. The
reason behind this change is because metal signs can be more visible
at night and during inclement weather as well as being more
efficient to maintain.
