Welcome to campus for ASU's 98th year
For those who are returning to campus after a busy summer and for those who are already here, welcome to Arkansas State University as we begin our 98th academic year. On Oct. 3, 1910, students came for the first day of class at the institution that has evolved into Arkansas State University. As ASU approaches the milestone of its creation through Arkansas Act 100 of 1909, planning for the Centennial celebration is underway.

Annual Faculty Conference starts Wednesday
The annual Fall Faculty Conference 2007 will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, in Centennial Hall, Reng Student Services Center/Student Union. The program is preceded by a continental breakfast at 8:30 in Centennial Hall, followed by the conference at 9:30. Dr. Glen Jones, interim vice chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research (AAR), will welcome participants. Allyson Lewis, author of The Seven Minute Difference, will be the morning keynote speaker, followed by Dr. V. Rick McDaniel, senior associate vice chancellor, AAR, Dr. Les Wyatt, president, ASU System, Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor, ASU-Jonesboro, and Chief James Chapman, University Police Department. The speakers will be followed by a luncheon featuring the afternoon keynote speaker, Dr. Ronald Takaki, professor of ethnic studies, University of California, Berkeley, discussing "Multicultural America." The afternoon will conclude with the Faculty Association fall business meeting.

Faculty family picnic is Wednesday evening
After the Faculty Conference, everyone will have a chance to relax and visit at the faculty family picnic, beginning at 6 p.m. at the ASU Pavilion. Live music will be provided by Snap Crow Legs and Paul Moore and Friends, bands featuring ASU faculty. Activities for the kids include a Bounce House and Obstacle Course. Academic Affairs and Research expresses appreciation to the volunteers and sponsors who have made this event possible. For details, contact Evone Roberts, ext. 2030.

New faculty are participating in workshop
A special welcome is extended to those individuals who are joining the ASU faculty for the first time this year. New faculty members are participating in orientation today and Tuesday. The orientation program is posted on the Academic Affairs and Research Web site.

First Year Convocation is Sunday, Aug. 19
The annual First Year Convocation, "Beginning the Tradition," will be Sunday, Aug. 19, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center. All first year students, who constitute the Class of 2011, are required to attend; parents and families are welcome to attend also.

Student Union offices to extend hours of service
Effective Monday, Aug. 20, offices in the ASU Student Union will extend their operating hours to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the convenience of the students they serve. The decision was made after an experiment with extended hours during the summer months. Those affected by the change are Admissions, Financial Aid, Residence Life, Career Services, Disability Services, Counseling Center, Testing Center, Registrar, Student Account Services, and Bookstore. (On Tuesday and Thursday of this week only, these offices will be open until 6:30 p.m.)
