Dr. Savary presents poster at World Congress
Dr. Brett Savary, Agriculture/ABI, presented an interactive poster at the World Congress on In Vitro Biology. His poster, “Growth patterns, sectreted protein profiles,Dr. Brett Savaryand EST transcripts from sugar beet (Beta vulgaris, L.) hairy root cultures,” was co-authored by Dr. Prasanna Vasu and Dr. Daya Anandan of ABI and Dr. Ann Smigocki and Dr. Alberto Nunez of the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. Dr. Savary's research focus areas include bioanalytical chemistry and protein purification technologies, plant cell wall polysaccharides and associated enzyme systems, utilization of proteins and polysaccharides in food processing residues, and bioprocessing and protein production by in vitro expression systems.

Dr. Lorence speaks, initiates collaborative agreement
Dr. Argelia Lorence, Chemistry/Metabolic Engineering, ABI, spoke at the World Congress on In Vitro Biology's Plant Symposium, “New Strategies for Production of Dr. Argelia LorenceSpecialized Metabolites,” presenting “Engineering Ascorbate for Enhanced Growth, Nutritional Content and Stress Tolerance in Crops.” Lorence also chaired the Plant Symposium, “Biodiversity for Improving Human Health,” with responsibilities that included session design, inviting of and gathering funds for appropriate speakers, and logistics. Lorence initiated an umbrella agreement, “Memorandum of Agreement and Understanding,” between Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianopolis, Brazil and Arkansas State University, allowing a research collaboration opportunity between the faculties at both institutions.

Dr. Sivakumar presents talk, poster, at World Congress
Dr. Ganapathy Sivakumar, Bioengineering, ABI, presented a plenary session invited talk and poster, “Air Lift Balloon-Type Bioreactor: Platform for Commercial Production of Dr. Ganapathy SivakumarPlant-Based Small Molecules and Tissues,” explaining laboratory-scale bioreactor production of high-tech phytopharmaceuticals, including natural resveratrol analogs from plant root culture platforms. Dr. Sivakumar also addressed developing simple downstream-processing technologies necessary for cost-effective recovery of phytomolecules for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries. The talk was co-authored by Dr. Maureen Dolan; ASU PhD student Jose Condori; Selester Bennett, Nature West, Inc.; Loretta Bacchetta, l'Energia e l'Ambiente (ENEA), Italy; and Dr. Fabricio Medina-Bolívar.

Dr. Chunzhao Liu presents talk at World Congress
Dr. Chunzhao Liu
, Bioengineering, ABI, presented a talk, “Novel Plant Reactors for Pharmaceutical Production,” at the World Congress on In Vitro Biology. Liu, a visiDr. Chunzhao Liuting professor at ABI,  and professor in the graduate school, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has numerous research interests, notably biochemical engineering, including bioreactor design and scale-up, bioprocess optimization and control, bioseparation (extraction, separation, and purification), enzyme technology; plant-based bioproducts, including pharmaceuticals, medicinal plant biotechnology, and biofuels; and phytochemical engineering, including metabolic engineering and quality control.
