University continues response to aftermath
of terrorist attacks in New York, Washington

* Approximately 200 students, faculty, staff and community representatives participated this morning in the Walk for Understanding, across the ASU campus.  Andrea Smalec, president of the Student Government Association, addressed the participants in front of the Dean B. Ellis Library about the importance of cultural understanding and religious tolerance, especially at this critical time in our nation's history. The purpose of the walk was to promote and confirm our commitment to the values that made America a standard for individual rights. Participants also paused for a moment of silence to reaffirm their personal commitment to strive for mutual understanding and compassionate tolerance toward all. The Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) helped organize the event.

* The faith leader of the local Islamic Center of Jonesboro issued a statement last week, decrying the "unconscionable acts of violence" in New York and Washington.  See the statement at /islamiccenter.htm

* Academic Affairs would like to assist students who may be called to active military duty.  Three options are available.  If the student chooses to withdraw, ASU will fully refund tuition and fees.  The student must present a copy of official orders to report. If the student chooses to receive an Incomplete (I), ASU will waive the normal time limitation and allow the student to remove the 'I'  whenever he/she returns.  (When this occurs, please note on the Incomplete form that the 'I' is due to military duty.) If the instructor believes the student has completed enough
work to date, the instructor may choose to give a grade based on the work completed. Should they be required to report in the next few days, the first
option is preferred.

* At latest report, no current ASU students, faculty or staff were at the sites of the terrorist strikes.  Several alumni and/or relatives have reported they managed to escape serious injury.

* Other information will be announced as it becomes available. To report developments or other information, send e-mail to asunews@astate.edu.
