12, 2001 Jonesboro Islamic Center decries unconscionable acts of violence In the wake of the tragic and unconscionable events of terrorism Tuesday, the Islamic Center of Jonesboro, the Arkansas State University Muslim students, and the area’s Muslim community are expressing their outrage with the cowardly acts of terrorism, according to Abdul Rahman, the Imam for the Islamic Center of Jonesboro. He issued the following statement through the university: "These acts are carried out only by those who have a hatred for peace. These terrorists cannot be true to Islam. True Muslims are peaceful and seek only to promote and live within a peaceful world. We believe these horrible acts are evil and vicious and are committed against all humanity. "The Muslim population of Jonesboro expresses its sorrow and most sincere and heartfelt condolences to all those who were injured and families of those killed as a result of the inhuman and atrocious attacks. "We also support all efforts to apprehend and bring to swift justice the terrorists who are responsible for these cowardly acts. We believe that no political or social cause can be served by these acts. Further, nothing can justify the immoral acts of violence against innocent people." He added that Jonesboro’s Muslim community is prepared to help in any way possible to increase awareness, understanding and compassion within the community. This could be through school visits, civic club presentations, business organizations, and university organizations. As the faith leader at the Islamic Center, the Imam serves as a leader in the prayer for Muslims and provides information and awareness in the ways of Islam.
