Department of Music to present 
University Singers fall concert

Oct. 25, 2005 -- The Department of Music at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will present the University Singers Men’s Choir and Women’s Choir in a fall concert under the direction of Dr. Dale Miller, director of choral activities, and Carolyn Smith, graduate conducting assistant. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, in Riceland Hall of Fowler Center.

The University Singers Women’s Choir will begin the program with selections by Hans Leo Hassler, Wolfgang Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn, Rene Clausen, Valerie Shields, Deems Taylor, Mark Brymer, Rollo Dilworth and Mark Hayes. The University Singers Men’s Choir will continue the concert with selections by Jacques Arcadelt, Franz Schubert, Carl Czerny, Philip Duey, Andre Thomas, and two arrangements of barbershop tunes. The combined groups will sing a double chorus setting of “Psalm 43” by Felix Mendelssohn. The Women’s Choir will be accompanied by Priscilla Noyes, senior piano major from Dexter, Mo. The Men’s Choir is accompanied by Ellen Philpot, adjunct music department instructor.

A Silent Auction will be held in the Grand Hall of Fowler Center immediately preceding the concert. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. patrons may register and bid for items displayed. Proceeds of the auction will benefit the ASU Concert Choir’s spring concert tour to Eastern Europe. 

The choir members have held several fundraising events to help defray the costs of the March 2006 trip which will include acappella concerts in Warsaw and Krakow, Poland, and Prague in the Czech Republic. The highlight of the musical performances will be a presentation of Mozart’s “Requiem” with the orchestra of the Krakow Academy of Music, Forum Sinfonia. Forum Sinfonia, Piotr Sulkowski, music director, has performed several times in Jonesboro and has served as the resident orchestra for the Wildwood Opera festival in Little Rock on numerous occasions.
