24, 2001 Dr. Veda McClain appointed chair of Teacher Education Dr. Veda Pendleton McClain will assume duties as chair of the Department of Teacher Education at Arkansas State University, effective July 1, announced Dr. John Beineke, dean of the College of Education. She has served as an assistant professor of reading education at ASU since 1997. A native of Pine Bluff, McClain previously taught in public schools in Little Rock and at the University of Central Arkansas. "Dr. McClain’s vision, her numerous leadership experiences, and her commitment to students all made her a strong candidate for the chair position," Dr. Beineke stated. After completing a bachelor of arts degree in English from Wesleyan University, and a master of science degree in reading from the University of Central Arkansas, she earned her doctor of philosophy degree in reading education from the University of Georgia. Her research interests include issues related to the socio-cultural nature of reading acquisition and family literacy. She is the mother of five children, and her mother is Ms. Jimmie Pendleton of Pine Bluff. Under a College of Education reorganization plan approved by the ASU Board of Trustees in December, the Department of Elementary Education will become the Department of Teacher Education, and two other departments will be combined to become the Department of Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Special Education. The organizational changes become effective July 1. The Department of Teacher Education includes undergraduate teacher education programs in preschool through grade 4, grades 4-8, grades 7-12, and several master’s degree programs. |
