4, 2002 Department of Music to present vocal recital by Janice Yoes, Christopher Lacy The Department of Music at Arkansas State University will present a vocal recital featuring guest artists Janice Yoes, soprano, and Christopher Lacy, piano, Monday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, located on Caraway Road. Yoes will also conduct a vocal master class featuring ASU voice students on Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Both the concert and master class are free and open to the public. Yoes is noted as an interpreter of Wagner and Strauss heroines as well as those of Verdi and Puccini. Major roles include Bruennhilde of the Ring, Isolde, Elektra, Salome and Turandot. She has performed in many of the major opera houses throughout the world, including those in Paris, Vienna, Rome, Marseille, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago de Chile and Seattle, and the New York City and Metropolitan Opera Companies. She has appeared in concert with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, and the Detroit, Nashville, and Gulf Coast Symphonies, as well as many of the European symphony orchestras. Yoes was born in Fayetteville and studied as both pianist and singer. She graduated with a bachelor of music degree in piano from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and received her master of music degree in voice from Tulsa University in Oklahoma. She continued vocal and opera studies with the late Hans J. Heinz of the Juilliard School of Music and Vincent La Selva of the New York Grand Opera. She has coached with Walter Taussig and Richard Voitach of the Metropolitan Opera, the late Otto Guth of the San Francisco Opera, and Alfred Snopf of Munich, Germany, among others. In 1985, Yoes joined the faculty of the Music Department of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she has taught voice and co-directed the Opera Theatre, while continuing her performing career. Her students have won in local, state, district, regional and national competitions. Yoes will sing a program of songs by Purcell, Schubert and Hoiby, as well as operatic arias. She will be joined on the recital by Matt Carey, assistant professor of voice at ASU, for a performance of the famous duet from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera "La Traviata."
