Freshman Writing Competition award winners announced

May 1, 2006 -- The winners of Arkansas State University’s 2006 Freshman Writing Competition were announced recently by Dr. Charles Carr, chair of the Department of English and Philosophy.

Nicholas Weeks of Jonesboro won first place and a $100 prize. His parents are John and Jackie Weeks of Jonesboro.

Whitney Bradford of Paragould, a journalism major, won second place and a $75 prize. Her mother is Theresa Bradford of Paragould.

Kerri Cooper of Jonesboro won third place and a $50 prize.

Students must be nominated by their English composition instructor to participate in the annual writing contest. Of 1,516 ASU students who took English composition in 2005-06, only 178 were nominated for the competition.
