Using stories, poetry, chants, and the spellbinding sound of African musical instruments, Shanta will take listeners down many different paths when she performs for the Communiversity Series at Arkansas State University, Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Drive.

Shanta will also visit Nettleton School District’s Fox Meadow Elementary School on Feb. 28, at 1:30 p.m.

Shanta began telling African folktales in the late 1970s and quickly came to understand how storytelling has served many functions for African people, just as it still does in these and other cultures of the world.

Her stories are about empowerment, peace, healing and self-discovery, and the many different ways in which people attain them. African folktales are still a very important part of this equation, but Shanta has created and collected other stories to encourage people to rise above perceived limitations, and make the world a better place, according to a spokesperson for the series.

Shanta’s stories are uniquely personal and yet amazingly universal. By sharing, through stories, those thoughts, ideas and dreams that are closest to her own heart, Shanta is able to connect with audiences of all ages and varying backgrounds.

Influenced by her own soul-searching, Shanta’s repertoire is filled with stories that encourage individuals to take responsibility for and control of their own lives, stories that offer alternative views on and approaches to life, and stories that bring joy to her listeners. She likes to involve her audience in the storytelling experience through music, rhythm and vocal responses, while also appreciating the quiet journey of the imagination as the story unfolds.
