Police continue to investigate campus shooting

July 26, 2009 -- Arkansas State University officials say that the university police department continues to investigate a shooting on campus which occurred early Saturday morning. Two emergency alerts were issued to the campus population Saturday morning that a student had been a victim of a shooting at Collegiate Park student housing.

University police officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call that a student had been the victim of a shooting in an apparent robbery attempt.  Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Rick Stripling said the student, whose name has not been released, is in a local hospital and is in stable condition.

“The student is listed in stable condition and the prognosis is good,” said Dr. Stripling. “All university procedures were followed fully to notify our students."

Both Stripling and University Police Department Chief Jim Chapman stressed that the incident was not a random shooting.

The injured student was able to provide the following details of the two suspects: Suspect #1: Large build black male wearing a red t-shirt, blue jeans, and a dark colored do-rag. Suspect #2: Thin build black male wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and a black do-rag.  This suspect also had a small tattoo on his neck.

At this time, it is unknown if the student was shot directly or indirectly during a scuffle that ensued during the robbery.  The suspects fled the area in an unknown direction.

Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the University Police Department at 870-972-2093.
