Engineering Student win regional
competition for bridge design

April 22, 2005--Engineering students from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro received second place overall in steel bridge design at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) regional conference earlier this month.

The Deep South Regional Conference held at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette featured various competitions. ASU participated in steel bridge design and concrete canoe placing in the top five in each competition.

The steel bridge team consisted of Matt Dorsey of Marion, Ryan Kigore of West Memphis, Will Harris of Forest City, Reeve Arce, Adam Crisler, and Matt Tinsley, all of Jonesboro; Andrew Hoggard and Jim Yancey, both of Cave City; Adam Watson of Batesville, Aaron Vowell of Rector, Brad Fureigh of Holly Grove, Jerred Jernigan of West Plains, Mo., Mark Morris of Wynne, Justin Pogacnik of Siloam Springs and Brad Clark of Poplar Bluff, Mo., who was named outstanding team leader.

In addition to the second place award overall, the steel bridge team also received second place for construction speed, economy, and efficiency along with third place for stiffness and aesthetics.

The concrete canoe team consisted of Brad Clark, Matt Tinsley, Andrew Hoggard, Adam Watson, Aaron Vowell, Jerred Jernigan, Justin Pogacnik, Aide Ramero of Hot Springs, Heidi Schmidt of Jonesboro, Jason Overturf of Horseshoe Bend, Randi Volkmer of Las Cruces, N.M., Jerred Parker of Palestine, Adam Robertson of Benton, and Daniel Landrum of Piggott who was selected outstanding team leader.

The concrete canoe team received first place for coed sprint, third place for women’s sprint and women’s endurance, fourth place for men’s endurance and fifth place for men’s sprint.
