Photojournalism professor receives
national educational achievement award

July 8, 2005 -- Dr. Jack Zibluk, associate professor of photojournalism at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, has been named the recipient of the Robin F. Garland Award for photojournalism education.

Zibluk received the award June 25 in San Antonio at the annual meeting of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). This award is the only NPPA educational achievement award and one of only seven that are given annually.

Zibluk was recognized for his work in diversity, access and ethics as well as many other activities.

He is a published scholar and has written extensively on diversity issues for News Photographer magazine, Media Ethics magazine and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. His newspaper column “Ethics of an Elite Economy,” has been published in Spanish and German translations in Europe. He currently serves as an ethics writer and columnist for News Photographer, the official publication of the NPPA.

A member of the ASU faculty since 1993, he previously served on the faculty of Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Zibluk also has an extensive newspaper background which includes writing and editing for various newspapers in Connecticut as well as the Commerical-Appeal in Memphis. He received his doctorate from Bowling Green and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Southern Connecticut State University. In 2002, Zibluk was named a faculty fellow at National Geographic.

Zibluk teaches photojournalism, news design and news writing at ASU. He also plays an active role in the NPPA where he serves as coordinator of the national student photo contest and co-chair of the national internship program.

“Since I write about the issues our students face, this is an award for our students and their achievements and perseverance in a highly competitive market,” Zibluk said.

“This award really wasn’t for me so much as it’s a recognition of the things I fight for: inclusion in the major job markets for students, like ours at ASU; students who can’t afford expensive equipment, or ones who can’t afford tens of thousands of dollars a year at elite schools. This award affirms my efforts to include minorities, first-generation college students and non-traditional students in consideration for jobs nationally,” Zibluk said.
