Beck PRIDE Center participant awarded Purple Heart May 2

May 5, 2009 -- Jonathan Wheeler, a participant in ArkansaJonathan Wheeler displays his Purple Heart, awarded to those wounded or killed in battle.The oldest military symbol and award still in use, it was originally established by George Washington in 1782.s State University’s Beck PRIDE Center for America’s Wounded Veterans, was presented the Purple Heart medal at a pinning ceremony Saturday, May 2, in an afternoon at the Arkansas National Guard Armory on the ASU campus.

Wheeler, an E4 combat medic with the 875th Army National Guard, was honored with the award after receiving wounds as a result of hostile actions while deployed in Iraq in 2007.

He serves as a Beck PRIDE Center Veterans volunteer and is a founding member and secretary of the Arkansas Student Veterans Organization at ASU.

A freshman who is completing his first semester at Arkansas State, Wheeler is pursuing a degree in a health care related field. He is a native of Batesville, and he and his wife Candice have two sons, Maeson and Treyce.
