Seminars to promote better
teaching and learning

September 12, 2006 - The Faculty Center for Learning and Teaching at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro is sponsoring two seminars to promote the latest teaching and learning methods in the college classroom on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 13-14. Renowned scholar and educator Dr. Dee Fink will conduct the seminars, including “So What is Good Teaching and How Can We Promote More of it?” and “Designing Courses for More Significant Learning Experiences.”

“So What is Good Teaching and How Can We Promote More it?” will be held Sept. 13, from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m., in the Student Union Auditorium. ASU faculty members and administrators will attend.

“Designing Courses for More Significant Learning Experiences” will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Student Union Auditorium. The public is welcome and encouraged to join the faculty and attend either the morning session, from 8:30 to 11:30, or the afternoon session, from 1 until 4.

Fink is a nationally recognized expert on college teaching and faculty development. He founded the Instructional Development Program at the University of Oklahoma in 1979 and served as its director until his retirement in 2005. He was president of the Professional and Organization Development Network in Higher Education in 2003-2006. Fink is now a private consultant.

He is the author of “Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses” which will be the basis of his presentations. He is also the co-editor of “Team-Based Learning: A Transformative Use of Small Groups in College Teaching.”
