Student dies from gunshot wound; Chancellor Potts expresses condolences

April 17, 2010 -- Arkansas State University student Michael Gilmore of West Helena, who sustained a gunshot wound Friday, died early Saturday morning at the Regional Medical Center of Memphis.

Jim Chapman, chief of University Police, said Gilmore died at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday and his body has been transported to the state crime laboratory in Little Rock.

ASU officials joined the campus community in mourning the death of Gilmore who was wounded at Collegiate Park Apartments Friday.

“The Arkansas State University family deeply mourns the loss of Mr. Michael Gilmore,” said Chancellor Robert L. Potts. “His death is an unnecessary tragedy and an unfortunate incident for someone so young who has had his life suddenly taken away. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family.”

Dr. Potts also stated that law enforcement is making every effort to ensure that the shooting incident is resolved and that it is a high priority. He also reassured ASU students that their safety is the principal concern of campus officials.

University Police officers were dispatched to the scene and Gilmore, a 24-year-old senior, was airlifted to the Memphis hospital in critical condition.

The incident continues to be under investigation and a high priority. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the University Police Department at (870) 972-2093.
