Dr. Hickman publishes two articles in Stereo
World magazine
July 8, 2008 --
Dr. Paul Hickman,
curator of the Visual Resource Library and assistant professor of art
history at Arkansas State University, has written two articles about
American photographer John James Reilly which appeared in the
January-February and May-June 2008 issues of
Stereo World
magazine.
The life and works of Reilly, a 19th-century photographer,
were featured in the first 13-page article, entitled “John James Reilly:
Catalog, Old Series (1867-75) and Views (1865-70).” The second article
which is 14 pages is entitled “John James Reilly: Additions to
Chronology, Catalog: New Series (1879-86) and Views (1870-86).”
Reilly’s life and works are assessed in a cross-disciplinary study from
the complementary perspectives of art, photographic, cultural, social,
and economic history. The principal themes depicted by the reproduction
and use of 38 of Reilly’s stereographs are Niagara Falls and Yosemite
Valley.
Niagara and Yosemite were visited, described, painted, and photographed
more than any other American scene. These tourist meccas are portrayed
as national icons. Judged by these criteria, Reilly is viewed as a
significant figure in the history of American art.
