To: ASU Jonesboro

The strategic planning process is building toward a culminating activity Monday, April 26. On that date, the Strategic Planning Council, the Deans, and the Governing Ideas Task Force will be working to specify 3 to 4 “strategic initiatives” (measurable, action steps) under each of the strategic directions. On Thursday, April 8, the Strategic Planning Council officially adopted the following set of strategic directions:

1.         Enhance the university’s reputation, visibility, and influence.

2.         Enhance learning by focusing on the institution’s priorities – teaching, research, and service.

3.         Develop a cohesive campus community based on strong shared governance, excellent communication, and mutual respect.

4.         Develop a culture of assessment to continually and systematically examine and enhance educational and institutional outcomes.

5.         Increase enrollment, retention rate, and graduation rate of both undergraduate and graduate students.

6.         Enhance the diversity and inclusiveness of students, faculty, staff, and curriculum.

7.         Increase resources to the university.

8.         Strategically allocate/reallocate resources among divisions and colleges based on institutional priorities.

9.         Develop an environment that fosters social and economic development.

I have listed at the end of this message the invitees to the April 26 conference. I wish we could shut down the university, rent a hotel ballroom, and involve everyone, but in lieu of that not being possible, will you please share your thinking on strategic initiative ideas with one or more of the people who will be attending as your representative. I know this is the busiest time of the academic year, but we are in the “homestretch” of the strategic planning process.

Your involvement at this juncture is important to the process!

While the strategic directions provide the skeleton of where we would like to point the university, the strategic “initiatives” will take us to the next level of specificity. They will give spirit, energy, and accountability to the outcomes. Please share your good ideas with one or more of the following persons between now and April 26.

Thank you.

David Cox, Chair
Strategic Planning Council
