Spring Commencement set for Saturday, May 5, with two ceremonies

April 25, 2007 -- Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will hold spring commencement Saturday, May 5, with one ceremony at 10 a.m. and another at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center.

The morning ceremony will include the Colleges of Communications, Education, Fine Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, University College, and the Center for Regional Programs. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe will address the graduates at the 10 a.m. ceremony. He also will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree at that ceremony.

The afternoon commencement will include the Colleges of Agriculture, Business, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Sciences and Mathematics. Jessica Hicks of Camden, this year’s Wilson Award winner, will be the student speaker for the morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies.

Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor of ASU-Jonesboro, will present the various diplomas. The Registrar’s Office has listed 1, 089 students as candidates for degrees at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Of that number, five are for doctoral degrees, 11 are for specialist’s degrees, 181 are for master’s degrees, and 892 are for undergraduate degrees.

In addition, 11 students will graduate summa cum laude, 75 students will graduate magna cum laude, and 89 students will graduate cum laude. Eight graduates are University Honors/Trustees’ Scholars, five students are Honors Program graduates, and one graduate is an Honors Program/Trustees’ Scholar.

A reception for all graduates, their guests, and faculty and staff will be held on the north mezzanine following each of the commencement ceremonies.
