ASU
confers 1,147 degrees during Spring Commencement 2009
June 2, 2009 --
More than 1,100 graduates were awarded diplomas at
Arkansas State University in Jonesboro during spring commencement
ceremonies
May 9 in the Convocation Center. Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor at
ASU-Jonesboro, presented the various diplomas.
Degrees were conferred upon 1,147 students representing 53 counties in
Arkansas, 20 states, and international students from 11 countries. Six
graduated summa cum laude (grade point average is 4.00), while 25
graduated magna cum laude (3.80-3.99 GPA), and 32 graduated
cum laude (3.60-3.79 grade point). Twenty-four graduated from the
university’s Honors Program. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to 812
students, while master’s degrees went to 181. Associate degrees were
awarded to 141 students, while 12 received specialist degrees, and one
doctoral degree was presented.
Dr. E. Gordon Gee, president of the Ohio State University, was the
featured speaker at both of ASU’s morning and afternoon ceremonies and
alternately entertained and offered sage advice to the overflow crowd of
graduates, faculty, families, and guests.
Dr. Gee encouraged the graduates, telling them the world needs them now
more than ever. “I firmly believe that every challenge presents us with
enormous opportunities, and I believe that your generation is uniquely
up to that task.”
He also told the group that its generation is the most optimistic and
involved generation he has ever seen in nearly four decades of academic
service. “You care and you want to understand,” he said. “And you want
to make the world a better and more just place."
Gee summed up his speech by telling the graduating class, “Stand for
something, even if you stand alone. Remember to call home, play nice. In
the real world, you cannot vote people off the island. Do what you love;
say thank you. Maintain for the rest of your life as much passion for
learning as you have at this moment. And, most importantly, do not be
frightened. You have the tools, the talents and the tenacity to tackle
life and succeed while making a difference.
