College of Sciences and Mathematics
recognizes top graduating students

April 30, 2007 -- The College of Sciences and Mathematics at Arkansas State University named 12 outstanding graduates as recipients of departmental awards for 2006-07 during the college’s annual honors banquet, according to Dr. Jerry Farris, associate dean of the college.

The departmental awards are presented during Convocation of Scholars each year to the graduate in each degree program who has excelled in scholarship, leadership and service to the department.

Those receiving awards and their respective degree programs were:

Allison Asher of Powhatan, biological sciences, zoology emphasis; Joshua P. Epperson of Olyphant, wildlife ecology and management; Raven Lawson of Powhatan, biological sciences, botany emphasis; Alison Green of Newport, biological sciences, pre-professional emphasis; Heather McPherson of Harrisburg, BSE, science education.

James J. Yancey of Helena and Sheffield C. Kent of Walnut Ridge, BS, chemistry; John B. Hyman of West Memphis, BA, chemistry.

Clayton M. Schoolfield of Caraway, BA, computer science; Jennifer Smith Schreit of Paragould, BSE, mathematics education; Alison LuAnn Wiley of Malvern, BS, mathematics.

Graduate student awards were presented to four candidates for the master's degree.  The students and their respective programs were: Rex E. Medlin Jr. of Jonesboro, biology; Yuan Lin of China, computer science; and Andrew F. Hostetler of Sheridan and Lindsey Bell of Loveland, Ohio, mathematics.
