to celebrate 70th anniversary

Aug. 3, 2006 -- The ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) program at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will soon observe its 70th anniversary.  In celebration, all former ROTC participants are invited to join a reunion full of festivities Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1 and 2.

Participants will get to enjoy two tailgate parties, the “Great A-State Tailgate” in downtown Jonesboro at Main St. and Monroe St. on Friday, Sept. 1, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and the ROTC tailgate at Indian Stadium, Saturday, Sept. 2, from 3:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Alumni also are invited to the ROTC Reunion Hospitality Room at the Holiday Inn Holidome Friday from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.  Campus tours will be given on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Three new members will be inducted into the ROTC Hall of Heroes during the breakfast on Saturday: Maj. Gen. James E. Simmons, ’74, of Newport; Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Scott Rowell, ’71, of Vienna, Va.; and 1st Lt. Michael McCarty, ’02, of Bald Knob.

The reunion is scheduled in conjunction with ASU’s football came against Army during Labor Day weekend.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.

The cost is $20 for ROTC alumni, which includes breakfast, the ROTC tailgate party, and a t-shirt. The cost for family members for each event is $6.  Tickets for the football game, which must be purchased separately, are $9 each.
