ASU ROTC commissions four candidates May 7; Jerry W. Bowen to be guest speaker

April 30, 2010 -- Arkansas State University’s Military Science Department will commission four ROTC cadets into the United States Army, during a ceremony Friday, May 7, at 3-4:30 p.m. in ASU’s Convocation Center Auditorium. A reception in the lounge will follow immediately after the ceremony, and the public is welcome to attend both the ceremony and the reception. Retired Colonel Jerry W. Bowen, Undersecretary, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and member of the ROTC Hall of Heroes, will be the guest speaker.

Heather A. Dapp of Jonesboro, Ark., will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Second Lieutenant Dapp commissioned into the Arkansas Army National Guard, branching Quarter Master Corps. She is the daughter of Steven and Mary Ann Dapp of Jonesboro.

Martin L. Fowler of Kennett, Mo., will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. Second Lieutenant Fowler commissioned active duty Army, branching Medical Service Corps. He is the son of Marty L. Fowler and Janet E. Baker of Kennett, Mo., and is married to the former Kelli Frederick.

Taylor O. Headley of Jonesboro will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.  He is also the George C. Marshall Award winner for  2010, given to the most outstanding MS 4 cadet. Second Lieutenant Headley commissioned active duty Army, branching Military Intelligence.  He is the son of Donald Headley of Searcy, Ark., and Amanda Taylor.

Dustin T. West of Woodlawn, Ark., will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications. Second Lieutenant West commissioned active duty Army, branching into the Infantry. He is the grandson of Gayle Murphy of Warren, Ark., and Katie and Dewey West of Monticello, Ark. Second Lieutenant West also represented the ASU Red Wolf Battalion this spring at the 13th Annual Battle Command Conference at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
