President's Scholars Awards
announced during student ceremony
April 10, 2006 -- Dr. Les Wyatt, president of
Arkansas State University, today announced the winners of the
President’s Scholars Award for 2005-2006.
Wyatt presented the awards during the 73rd Annual Student Honors Awards
Ceremony and Reception, an annual event hosted by the university to
recognize ASU’s most outstanding graduates. The reception is the
highlight of Convocation of Scholars.
The award is presented to the graduating senior in each college who has
the highest overall grade point average. Graduates from August and
December 2005 as well as those graduating in May of this year were
eligible.
Recipients and their respective colleges were Wesley W. Ward of Lake
City, Agriculture; Sarah Bowden of Manila, Business; Jessica Rena Walker
of Mountain Home, Communications; Alexandra Ramsey of Jacksonville,
Education; Michael Cannon of Paragould, Engineering; Whitney Farris of Jonesboro,
Fine Arts; Jennifer Haney of Cabot, Humanities and Social Sciences; Molli Marie Denton of Jonesboro, Nursing and Health Professions; Peter
Corey Townsend of Sherwood, Sciences and Mathematics; and Sarah
Elizabeth Prislovsky of Stuttgart, University College.
College of Agriculture
Wesley W. Ward
Wesley will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural
business from the College of Agriculture. Jeremy plans to attend the
Marine Corp Officer Program in June and attend law school at the
University of Arkansas at Fayetteville next fall.
His parents are Larry and Kathy Ward of Lake City. His advisor is Lori
Fenner.
College of Business
Sarah Bowden
Sarah will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from
the College of Business. She has been on the President’s List every
semester while attending ASU. She is a recipient of the Talbot-Carruthers
Dean’s Award and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. After successfully
completing the CPA exam, she plans to work as a certified public
accountant.
Sarah is married to Richard Bowden of Manila and is the daughter of
David and Lisa Stutts. Her advisor is Dr. Rebecca Carr.
College of Communications
Jessica Rena Walker
Jessica will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in speech
communication from the College of Communications. She has been named to
Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and is a
member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, while also serving as a senator in
the Student Government Association.
Jessica’s parents are Terry and Theressa Walker of Mountain Home. Dr.
Tom Baglan is her advisor.
College of Education
Alexandra Ramsey
Alexandra will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in psychology
from the College of Education. She is a recipient of the Presidential
Scholarship and is a member of Psi-Chi Honor Society. She serves as
president and is a founding member of the ASU Chapter of the Society of
Neuroscience. Upon graduation, she plans to enroll in graduate school
and pursue a doctorate in psychology.
Alexandra is the daughter of William Ramsey of Austin, Texas, and Donna
Eudy of Jacksonville. Her advisors are Dr. Amy Pearce and Dr. Irina
Khramtsova.
College of Engineering
Michael Cannon
Michael will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in technology from
the College of Engineering. He plans to pursue a master’s degree upon
graduation. A President’s List student for four consecutive semesters,
he also is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Michael is married to Amber Cannon and is the son of Tom Gullick of
Coldwater, Miss., and Sue Furr of Millington, Tenn. Dr. Charles Coleman
is his advisor.
College of Fine Arts
Whitney Farris
Whitney will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in music education
from the College of Fine Arts. After graduation, she plans to pursue a
graduate degree and perform in a professional orchestra. Her
achievements include being accepted to the Arkansas Intercollegiate Band
for four years and serving as president of her sorority, Alpha Gamma
Delta. She is attending ASU as a Trustees Scholar in The Honors Program.
Her parents are Dr. Jerry and Kathy Farris of Jonesboro. Joe Bonner is
her advisor.
College of Humanities and Social Sciences
Jennifer Haney
Jennifer will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in English and in
Philosophy from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She plans
to attend graduate school and ultimately teach at a university. During
her undergraduate studies, she was a Presidential Ambassador, a member
of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Lambda, and the National Society of
Collegiate Scholars. She has served as publicity chair of Habitat for
Humanity and was named to the national Dean’s List from 2004-06.
Jennifer is the daughter of Harold and Linda Haney of Cabot.
Her advisors are Dr. Charles Carr and Dr. Deborah Chappel.
College of Nursing and Health Professions
Molli Marie Denton
Molli will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in radiologic
sciences from the College of Nursing and Health Professions. She has
attended ASU on a Trustees’ Scholarship and is in the University Honors
program and Lambda Nu Honors Society.
She is the daughter of Jerry and Pat Denton of Jonesboro.
Ray Winters is her advisor.
College of Sciences and Mathematics
Peter Corey Townsend
Peter will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from
the College of Sciences and Mathematics. He has been accepted to the
Ph.D. program at Washington University in St. Louis upon graduation. He
has attended ASU on a Trustees’ Scholarship and is in the University
Honors program. He is co-president of the ASU Chapter of the
Mathematical Association of America.
His parents are Vester Nathan and Denise Cynthia Townsend of Sherwood.
His advisor is Dr. William Paulsen.
University College
Sarah Elizabeth Prislovsky
Sarah will graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary
studies from the University College. Upon graduation, she will be
working at the University of Arkansas Rice Experiment Station. She has
been on the President’s List and Dean’s List every semester while
attending ASU and, in 2003, she was named to Who’s Who Among American
Colleges and Universities. She is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, the Golden
Key International Society and has also been named to the national Dean’s
List.
Her parents are Gene and Kathy Prislovsky of Stuttgart. Dr. Herman
Strickland is her advisor.
Other 4.0 Students
In the event more than one student in the same college has a perfect 4.0
grade point, the student with the most credit hours receives the award.
Those recognized as 4.0 students and their respective colleges were:
Tiffany Tillman of Cherry Valley, Justin Walker of Pocahontas, and Jodie
Lynette Liles of Batesville, all of Business; Christina M. Crawford of
Gosnell, Humanities and Social Sciences; and Cody Ashby of Paragould,
Sciences and Mathematics.
