Agribusiness Conference to feature
ASU alumnus, Deere and Co. economist

Dr. J.B. Penn, Deere & Company’s chief economist, will give the luncheon address at the 13th annual Arkansas State University Agribusiness Conference Wednesday, Feb. 14, in the ASU Fowler and Convocation Centers in Jonesboro.

At Deere and Company, Penn has responsibility for analyzing global macro-economic policy and trade developments to help the company achieve sustainable, strong business results. Prior to joining Deere & Company, Dr. Penn served as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s under secretary for farm and foreign agricultural services. He has extensive international experience, having served on many foreign missions and task forces as well as conducting projects in numerous countries.

Before his appointment to the USDA, Penn had an extensive career in the private sector. Most recently, he was senior vice president and manager of Sparks Companies, Inc.'s Washington office for over a dozen years. Prior to joining Sparks, he was president of Economic Perspectives, Inc. from 1981 to 1988. Penn's government experience includes service as deputy administrator for economics of the USDA's then Economics and Statistics Service and as senior staff economist for the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

Dr. Penn holds a B.S. degree in agriculture from Arkansas State University, a M.S. degree in agricultural economics from Louisiana State University and a Ph.D. degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University. He is an elected fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association and previously participated in numerous professional organizations. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles and reports, including Agricultural and Food Policy (sixth edition) that is widely used in U.S. universities. He holds Distinguished Alumnus awards from Arkansas State and Purdue's College of Agriculture.
