Public Relations students win
top honors at state competition

April 20, 2005-- Several public relations students from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro recently won awards at the Prism Awards Gala in Little Rock conducted by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Arkansas Chapter.

Receiving Student Prisms were: Kila Williams of Hot Springs, Kayla Eubanks and Sarah Whybrew, both of Jonesboro, Caitlyn Mitchell of Menifee, Calif., Haley Pounders of Wilson, Kellie Scott of Piggott, and Brian Templeton of Swifton. Stacy Hudson of Searcy received a Gold Award.

Williams received a Prism for a research project titled “Presidential Releases: A Look at 2004 Political Conventions and Press Releases,” and for the category of writing/media: news release for “Fowler Center Series Presents Salzburg Chamber Soloists.” Williams received the only perfect score from the judges among the Student Prisms. Her research project performed a content analysis of news releases available on the two presidential nominees’ official campaign websites during the 2004 Republican and Democratic National Conventions.

Eubanks and Mitchell received a Prism for the category of Communications Campaigns titled “Jonesboro and ASU Athletics: A Relationship Worth Rooting For.”
Mitchell, Pounders, Scott, Templeton, and Whybrew received a Prism for a joint project in the category of Special Events titled “Rock the Halls: Battle of the Bands 2005.”

Hudson received the Gold Award for her project titled “College Students: How they perceive politicians in relation to their uses of the media.”

The purpose of the Student Prism Awards is to honor outstanding work in communications, journalism and public relations by students. It is open to all Arkansas colleges and universities, and gives students the opportunity to showcase those talents and efforts to the members of the professional society.

The student awards are held each year in conjunction with the PRSA Prism Awards at the annual Prism Awards Gala to recognize the creative work of professionals in communications, public relations and journalism.

Lisa Moskal, instructor of journalism-public relations, is the advisor for ASU’s student chapter of PRSA, the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).
