Arkansas State University in Jonesboro has recently established an Office of Non-traditional Student Services to provide social and academic support to a growing base of students.

According to Kimberley Johnson, assistant dean for student assistance, who serves as director of the new program, non-traditional students have steadily increased over the last few years.

Non-traditional students include those who are: age 25 and over, returning to school after five years, a working professional, married (with or without children) and single or divorced with children.

Non-traditional students have special needs, according to Johnson, and the office will help as a liaison connecting the student with academic services on campus as well as services within the community.

Besides serving as a central resource, the office includes a study area and a lounge for non-traditional students. Activities are planned throughout the year, which include a movie day for families, more social programs, academic-based counseling and advisement and career exploration.
