Roll-out event for new Red Wolves mascot
imagery will be Thursday, March 13

March 7, 2008 -- A roll-out ceremony for the new athletics mascot is now scheduled for Thursday morning, March 13, on the Arkansas State University campus. Students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of ASU athletics are welcome to attend.

At the request of Chancellor Robert L. Potts, the Board of Trustees voted to ratify his choice of "Red Wolves" as the new mascot. Potts based his decision on a number of factors, including the fact that Red Wolves is a unique name among sports teams, while Wolves is more common.

"This would make our choice unique, and much easier to protect under intellectual property law," Dr. Potts told the Board. "The red wolf is a noble species that once inhabited Arkansas. They are vicious and very aggressive. I believe that Red Wolves is the best choice and that is the mascot that we would like to adopt."

The ceremony to reveal new imagery for the mascot will start at 11 a.m. on the east side of the Student Union.

Dr. Potts will unveil the new imagery. Two students Morgan Pippin, president of the Student Government Association, and Corey Leonard, quarterback of the football team will be among the speakers.

In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the Student Union center court area.

The decision was another major step during a process that began about a year ago in response to NCAA sanctions.

ASU’s athletic teams will begin competing as Red Wolves next fall at the beginning of the academic year.
