ASU Museum plans
weekend trip Jan.
10,
2005--The Arkansas State University Museum and Advisory Council in
Jonesboro is sponsoring a “Salute to the Lakeport Plantation” on
Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15. The
Lakeport Plantation home in Lake Village, Arkansas, is considered one of
Arkansas’ premier historic sites (circa 1859).
It was placed on the National Register in 1974.
The plantation was designated an official project of the Save
America’s Treasures program through the National Park Service and the
National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2002.
The
site is part of the educational programming for Arkansas State University
and other partners. Restoration is
being funded through grants from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural
Resources Council, the Save America’s Treasures program, and the
Arkansas Forestry Commission. This
will be a final opportunity to tour the house in its present state, prior
to closing for two years for major restoration work.
The
“Friends of Lakeport” will host the ASU Museum group at a private
dinner, with remarks by Dr. Ruth Hawkins, Director of the Lakeport
project, and Sam Angel, whose family donated the property to Arkansas
State University. The
group will travel by chartered bus to Lake Village, located in the
southeast portion of the state, with other cultural stops along the route
from Jonesboro. Other highlights
include tours of the Delta Cultural Center and the Pillow-Thompson House
in Helena, and the Arkansas Post National Memorial near Gillett.
