KASU presents Jeannie and the Guys
on Bluesday Tuesday, July 13
June 29, 2010
--
One of northeast Arkansas’ most experienced bands,
Jeannie and the Guys, will
perform at KASU’s fourth Bluesday Tuesday concert to be held at the
Newport Country Club. The July 13 concert begins at 7 p.m. and is free
and open to the public. KASU will pass the hat to help pay the
musicians, who live in Jackson, Poinsett, Independence and Cleburne
Counties.
Although the band has had various members over the years, the core
lineup includes Jean Hendrix, Zyndall Raney, Marcus Grady and Doug
Greeno. Sonny Burgess, who
co-founded the group, frequently performs with Jeannie and the Guys when
not fulfilling obligations with his main band, the Pacers. Jeannie and
the Guys play most Saturday nights for the dancers and the audience at
the Silver Moon in Newport.
The repertoire of Jeannie and the Guys includes the works of early
rock-and-roll hit makers such as Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis;
country and honky-tonk favorites popularized by artists like Ray Price,
Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline; and popular instrumentals such as “Last
Date.”
Jean Hendrix, the lead female vocalist and drummer, sings rock-and-roll
and classic country tunes equally well, while providing the rhythm track
for the Guys. Zyndall Raney plays piano and keyboards, and frequently
provides vocal support. He is the son of the late great Wayne Raney, one
of the pioneers of country music singing and harmonica playing as a
member of the Delmore Brothers band and later as a solo recording
artist. Marcus Grady, guitarist and singer, was a member of the Grady-Jefford
Band, which played in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Doug Greeno, vocalist and bass
player for Jeannie and the Guys, is a former member of the Kings IV band
in the 1960s, along with Sonny Burgess. Greeno performed with the
Distance Band at the legendary Bob King's Capri in Swifton for twelve
years.
Bluesday Tuesday concerts are held on the second Tuesday night each
month at the Newport Country Club, 703 Walker Drive, on the southwest
edge of town, near Newport High School. C and C Distributors and
ASU-Newport provide sponsorship, in cooperation with KASU, the public
radio service of Arkansas State University, and the Newport Country
Club. There is no membership fee or cover charge, and the public is
welcome.
