College of Humanities and Social
Sciences honors graduating students

April 28, 2005 -- The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Arkansas State University has named 19 outstanding students as recipients of departmental awards for 2003-04 during the college’s annual honors banquet, according to Dr. Gloria Gibson, dean of the college.

      The departmental awards are presented each year during Convocation of Scholars to the graduating student in each degree program who has excelled in scholarship, leadership and service to the department.

      Those receiving awards and their respective degree programs were: Beth Rose Bruce of Newark, BSE, social science; Angela L. Boyd of Paragould, BA, political science; Eric J. Backstrom of Little Rock and Brandon C. Holland of Judsonia (tie), BA, pre-law program; April Merritt of Harrisburg, BA, criminology; Nikki Cox of Bald Knob, BA, sociology;

      Others were Chase A. Davis of Bay, BA, philosophy; Brannan M. Brown of Cabot, BA, English; Jenny L. Roe of Paragould, BSE, English education; Sarah Meghan Mitchell of Paragould, BSE, Spanish education; Ludivine Suzanne Francine Miles of France, BSE, French education; and Irina Kathleen Stone of Camden, BA, history.

      Graduate awards were presented to Laura Opper Hodo of Newport, Galloway Award (MA, history); Julie Ann Sorrell of Poplar Bluff, Mo., MA, political science; Gaylon W. Rainwater of Knobel, MPA, public administration; and Micah Myers of Greenwood, Miss., outstanding German student.
