Gina Bowman joins staff of University Communications

Aug. 28, 2008 -- Gina Bowman, who worked in the Sports Information office at Arkansas State for the last 33 years, has joined Arkansas State University’s Office of University Communications as senior communications specialist with emphasis in media relations. She assumed her duties July 1, bringing a wealth of writing, editing, and media experience to University Communications.

A graduate of ASU with a degree in journalism, Bowman served as ASU’s assistant director of Sports Information from 1976-94. In addition, she became assistant athletic director for Media Relations in 1994, and during that span, added the responsibility of the department’s Senior Woman Administrator until 2002. From 2002-06, she was assistant director of Athletics for Media Relations, and was assistant director of Sports Information from 2006-08.

Most recently, Bowman was part of the ASU mascot retirement group and is currently working with the Centennial Committee for the university’s 100^th anniversary celebration in 2009.

She has served on various committees at the ASU, including the first NCAA Certification committee during 1995-96 for Gender Equity, Minority Issues, and Student-Athlete Welfare. In addition, she was a committee member of the Sun Belt Conference track and field, football, NCAA Post Graduate District, and NCAA Scholarship groups.

Bowman was selected to the media relations staff at the United States South Sports Festival in St. Louis in 1994.

A winner of the 2001 Quarter Century of Service award by the Sun Belt Conference, she also received an Outstanding Service Award from ASU in 1998.

Bowman is also a voting member of the College Sports Information Directors of America since 1990, and holds memberships in the Female Athletic Media Relations Executives organization, Basketball Writers of America, Football Writers Association of America, and Arkansas State’s Alumni Association. She has also worked as a sportswriter for the Arkansas Democrat (1976-80) and the Pine Bluff Commercial (1981-83).
