Former employee charged with theft of property

July 29, 2009, Jonesboro, Ark. -- Special Agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division have taken into custody Virginia DeMaine, 56, of Jonesboro, Arkansas. DeMaine is presently charged with one felony count of theft of property.

DeMaine, who has been employed by Arkansas State University, is the subject of a continuing investigation.

The arrest stems from an investigation requested by Arkansas State University and conducted by the Arkansas State Police and officers of the Arkansas State University Police Department, in conjunction with the Division of Legislative Audit.

DeMaine is alleged to have diverted monies intended for the University’s Childhood Development Associate Program.

ASU officials stress that the discovered monetary loss does not affect any ASU student enrollment or the validity of any ASU course. The University will work with law enforcement, its surety bond carrier, and the courts to recover any embezzled funds for the University.
