Wall of Honor recognizing ASU's First 100 Distinguished Faculty Members unveiled

April 5, 2010 -- The centennial faculty wall to honor 100 distinguished faculty members throughout Arkansas State University’s history was unveiled April 5 during a 3-5 p.m. reception in Centennial Hall in the Reng Student Services Center/Student Union, 101 N. Caraway Road, Jonesboro. The wall is part of ASU’s continuing Centennial Celebration, and the reception is hosted by the ASU Faculty Association.

The names of each faculty member are to be included on a wall structure outside Centennial Hall. The wall plaque was designed by Mark Reeves of ASU’s Publications and Creative Services department and produced by Gibson Sign Company of Jonesboro. Mike Doyle, general manager of ASU’s public radio station KASU-FM, will read the names of all honorees, and certificates will be presented to the faculty member or faculty family member by Dr. Beverly Boals Gilbert, President of the ASU Faculty Association.

“One of the main goals of the Centennial is the commemoration of our shared past and also the establishment of new legacies and traditions for the second century of teaching, scholarship and professional service,” said Dr. John D. Hall, professor of Psychology and Counseling and chair of the Faculty Association Ad hoc Committee on Centennial Celebrations and Projects. “We commemorate our shared past by honoring the first 100 distinguished faculty.”

Honorees were selected through subcommittees of faculty representatives from each college and two Faculty Association committees at ASU. Nominees were required to be retired ASU faculty members who, except in extraordinary cases, had a minimum of 10 years of service. They were also required to have made long term significant contributions to ASU. Plans are also being proposed by the Faculty Association to continue this tradition into the future by honoring additional past faculty who made similar contributions at five year intervals.

Dr. Hall also noted that, in the cases of faculty members from the earliest years, the Faculty Association Ad hoc committee relied on historical documents, personal memories, and the historical book, “Voices from State: An Oral History of Arkansas State University,” by Dr. Larry Ball and Dr. William Clements, and also the Lee A. Dew book, “The ASU Story: A History of Arkansas State University, 1909-1967.”
