Ability -- Disability “Don’t ‘Dis’ Our Ability” is the theme for Arkansas State University’s Disability Awareness Week, March 6-12. ASU Disability Services has several events planned for the week. An exhibit fair designed to showcase disability awareness among students, faculty and staff will be held Tuesday, March 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Center Court. Hearing screenings will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the 2nd floor Student Union Conference Room. The screenings are sponsored by the Department of Communication Disorders and Disability Services. Also on Tuesday, Bernie Quell, program manager for the EmployAbility Project, will present “Work Incentives You Need to Know” at 1 p.m. in the Student Union Mockingbird Room. This interactive presentation will explain the Working Disabled Medicaid Program. “Universal Design: Effectively Teaching All Students,” an interactive workshop for new faculty members, will be held in the Student Union Pine Tree Room. There will be three opportunities to attend this workshop, Tuesday, March 6, at 1 p.m.; Wednesday, March 7, at 3 p.m.; or Thursday, March 8, at 3 p.m. During this one hour workshop, faculty members will interact through discussion and scenarios to learn techniques to best accommodate students with disabilities. Several hands-on workshops on techniques to create an accessible website will be held Wednesday, March 7, and Thursday, March 15. Each workshop is an hour long. Sessions start on Wednesday, March 7, at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. Session times for Thursday, March 15, are 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. This workshop is open to all faculty and staff. On March 8, “Explore the Possibilities” Career Fair will be held in the Student Center Ballroom at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is a statewide career fair, with full time positions and internships, for college students with disabilities. For transportation, contact Kelly McCoy or Jenifer Rice-Mason in the Office of Disability Services, 972-3964. The Miracles will perform Monday, March 12, at noon in the Student Union Center Court. This is a group of musically-gifted adults who live at the Baddour Center in Senatobia, Miss., a residential community designed for adults with intellectual disabilities. The performance is sponsored by Disability Services, the Jonesboro Human Development Center Volunteer Council and the Baptist Collegiate Ministry.
