30th annual Convocation of Scholars Week
ceremonies announced
April 1, 2008 --
The 30th
annual Convocation of Scholars Week activities at Arkansas State
University-Jonesboro include a series of special events and awards
ceremonies. Events will include the Student Honors Awards Ceremony, the
Faculty Honors Convocation, and numerous events sponsored by the various
colleges at ASU.
The Student Honors Awards Ceremony will be held in the Student Union
Auditorium on Monday, April 7, at 3 p.m. As part of this program, the R.
E. Lee Wilson Award, Distinguished Service awards, and outstanding
graduates of the university will be announced. The Wilson Award, ASU’s
most prestigious student honor, is presented annually to the most
outstanding graduating senior. The Wilson Award committee's selection
from among the nominees is based upon character, determination,
involvement, and academic achievement. The event is free and open to the
public.
The Faculty Honors Convocation at ASU-Jonesboro will be held Wednesday,
April 9, from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in the Grand Hall of Fowler Center. Faculty
achievement awards will be presented, and retiring faculty will be
recognized. This celebration is free and open to the public.
Banquets, honors ceremonies, and special events sponsored by the various
colleges at ASU-Jonesboro are scheduled as follows, in chronological
order:
The College of Education presents its doctoral cohort annual symposium
in the Mockingbird Room of the Student Union on Saturday, April 5, from
12 noon to 5 p.m. This year's topic for Educational Leadership Cohort IV
will be, "Curriculum Wars in Education." Cohort students worked
collaboratively for two years to produce a monograph on the topic of
'Curriculum Wars' as part of their doctoral comprehensive examination.
Refreshments will be provided at the event, which is sponsored by the
Eugene Smith Center for Excellence in Education. For more information,

The College of Business presents its annual Honors Banquet in Centennial
Hall of the Student Union on Monday, April 7, at 6:30 p.m. The
Distinguished Alumni award will be presented, along with the
presentation of College of Business faculty members who will retire at
the end of the academic year. Other recognitions include senior honor
students, junior honor students, the Dean's Award for Academic
Excellence, and scholarship recipients. The Wall Street Journal
Award will be announced along with College of Business students named to
Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. For more

The College of Nursing and Health Professions hosts its Convocation of
Scholars Banquet in Hames Rooms A, B, and C in the Convocation Center on
Monday, April 7, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dean Susan Hanrahan and department
chairs will present awards for students in each College of Nursing and
Health Professions program, with special awards and faculty recognitions
also included in the evening's festivities. For more information, call

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences presents its Spring 2008
Honors Banquet in Centennial Hall of the Student Union on Tuesday, April
8, beginning at 6 p.m. Outstanding College of Humanities and Social
Sciences students and faculty will be recognized for their achievements.

On Wednesday, April 9, the College of Communications presents its
Student Honors Banquet in Centennial Hall of the Student Union at 6:30
p.m. Graduating seniors and outstanding students in the College of
Communications will be honored, and scholarships will be announced.
These include the college scholar awards, departmental awards, student
organization awards, and the Hoskins Award for Professional Achievement.
There will also be an announcement naming the incoming editor of The
Herald, ASU's student newspaper, and the incoming station manager for
ASU-TV. Special guest speaker will be Michael Lewellen, a 1983 ASU
graduate and current vice president of public relations for the
Universal Orlando Resort. For more information, call the College of

On Thursday, April 10, the College of Engineering presents its
Convocation of Scholars Student Awards and Seminar Program in Room 203
of the Agriculture Building, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Special guest
speaker will be Chief Warrant Officer Timothy Kilpatrick of the U. S.
Navy, who will present a program about the Navy's Nuclear Officer
Program. Student honors will include the Citizenship Award, Outstanding
Electrical Student, Outstanding Civil Student, Outstanding Electrical
Circuits Student, and Outstanding Statics Student. For more information,

Also on Thursday, April 10, the College of Agriculture presents its
annual Honors Banquet in the Hames Room of the convocation Center at
6:30 p.m. The event will honor outstanding students, outstanding
graduating seniors, the Chancellor's Award recipient from the College of
Agriculture, scholarship recipients, and outstanding alumni. For more

On April 11, the College of Sciences and Mathematics presents its Honors
Banquet in Centennial Hall of the Student Union at 12 noon. The luncheon
and awards ceremony will include a special presentation by Dr. Jeff
Jenness, chair of the Department of Computer Sciences, who will speak
about ASU's partnership with Shandong University in China. For more

The awards reception for Educational Leadership, Curriculum, and Special
Education takes place in Centennial Hall of the Student Union on Monday,
April 28, at 6 p.m. Outstanding graduate students and alumni will be
recognized, and awards will be presented for curriculum and instruction;
education for gifted, talented and creative; educational leadership;
special education, and theory and practice. The Eugene Smith Award will
