ASU Energy Conservation
Winter 2005-2006

Natural gas prices have increased by 100 percent from the last winter season due to the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Facilities Management has enacted a boiler management program to save 2 percent of annual gas consumption on the ASU campus.
 

• Students, faculty, and staff are asked to conserve energy by setting the thermostat to lower temperatures during unoccupied times (nights, weekends, and holiday periods)
• The night reset temperature during regular weekdays is recommended at 65 degrees
• The weekend and holiday reset temperature is recommended at 60 degrees
• Please set the thermostat between 70 to 72 degrees during occupied hours
  
  The thermostat temperature reset measures, if followed campus-wide, could conserve 10 to 15% of annual gas consumption. Gas consumption is relative to exterior temperature. Therefore, if a cold winter is present, campus participation will have a significant impact on natural gas conservation. These temperature settings should allow for normal surrounding temperatures without the need for additional heat sources. 
  Supplemental heat sources such as space heaters are not generally recommended. In isolated cases where individuals may experience uncomfortably cool temperatures because of imbalanced air flows or extraordinary personal body temperature sensitivity, the F&A policy outlines the temperature control strategy and approval requirement for electric space heater use. To obtain approval in accordance with this policy, the following procedures apply.

   

  1. Anyone desiring to use a space heater should submit a "work order service request" to Facilities Management asking for an electrical capacity check and approval of a space heater use. The following model space heater or equivalent is considered safe and acceptable for use in offices on campus. The use of the heater is subject to approval of Facilities Management relative to the adequacy of electrical capacity within the space, given other office equipment: 
     Dakota Model NY35Q, Oil-Filled Heater 400 watt, 3 amp, 120 volt with 3-prong plug with tip-over switch.
  2. When submitting a work order request, the requestor should indicate the proposed model to be used with comparative specifications, if different from the standard referenced above. If approved, the space heater must be purchased by the individual at his/her personal expense and tagged for approval by Facilities Management.
