Office of Diversity Initiatives issues call for proposals; deadline is April 13

March 19, 2009 -- The ASU Office of Diversity Initiatives announces a call for proposals for curriculum or research innovation projects promoting inclusive excellence. The major goals of this initiative are to infuse diversity into the undergraduate curriculum and to support diversity-based research. Full-time faculty members are eligible to apply for grants that will be utilized to provide faculty reassignment for Summer 2009, Fall 2009, or Spring 2010.

Additional Goals of the Project:

• Develop new undergraduate courses with substantive diversity content

• Develop strategies to interface the curriculum with co-curricular learning experiences

• Contribute to the emerging field of research in diversity and inclusiveness

Of special interest are proposals that combine an inclusive curriculum with:

• Inclusive pedagogy

• Learning outcomes for general education

• Fulfilling a requirement in the major

• Infusing diversity into math and science courses

• Developing diversity-centered online courses

Research projects focusing on student engagement, student learning, teaching diversity, or globalization are also of special interest.

Campus members can apply for support by submitting a written proposal that includes the following:

1. A cover page with your contact information.

2. A letter of support from your department chair and dean reflecting a commitment to offer the course and to grant reassigned time should the proposal be accepted.

3. The narrative for the proposal, not exceeding two double-spaced pages, that includes the following:

• The level of the course and its expected enrollment

• Identification of the major or general education requirement

• A short description of the new course, emphasizing its diversity content and describing its co-curricular component

• A detailed description and outline of the proposed research project

Expected Outcomes:

• Production of a new syllabus for the course as proposed

• Development course components integrating co-curricular learning experiences

• Participation in a symposium in the next academic year, discussing the diversity content of the new course

• Service as a mentor/advisor for other faculty for infusing diversity into the curriculum

• Service as a reviewer of future proposals for infusing diversity into the curriculum

• Creation of online courses that will expose a broader audience to principles of diversity

• Submission of a completed scholarly project for inclusion in a refereed journal

• Development and presentation of creative professional activities

Please submit your application via email as a Word document to Dr. Lillie M. Fears at lfears@astate.edu  no later than Monday, April 13, 2009.
