Bringing the tradition of India to Arkansas State University, the Kalapriya Dancers will perform as part of the Communiversity Series on Thursday, Nov. 1, in Riceland Hall at Fowler Center, located at 201 Olympic Drive, at 7:30 p.m.

The Communiversity Series is sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.

The Kalapriya dance troupe is dedicated to maintaining the tradition and rich heritage of India through the classical Indian dance Bharata Natyam under the artistic direction of Pranita Jain. This art form has rhythmic footwork, using complicated rhythms and counter rhythms, stylized hand gestures and facial expressions to describe a story or interpret a sentiment.

Pranita Jain is the founding member and artistic director of Kalapriya. Trained by renowned gurus in India, Pranita has performed extensively in the United States and India, including performances at Harvard University, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Chicago.

Pranita has participated in SPICMACAY programs in India, receiving the patronage of the royal family of Jodhpur.

Kalapriya’s repertoire includes "Krishna Leela" which describes various episodes from the Hindu deity Krishna's life based on Hindu mythology; "A Song Offering," a Bharata Natyam dance recital that finds spirituality in nature; "Geetanjli," which is based on Nobel Prize-winning poems of Rabindranath Tagore; "Bharatotsvam: A Festival of India," portraying the diverse regions and cultures of India; and "Rhythms of Time," a Bharata Natyam recital that uses contemporary themes and verses. New repertoire is always being developed for programs.

The performance is a Heartland Arts Fund performance. The Heartland Arts Fund is a collaborative venture of Arts Midwest, Mid-America Arts Alliance, and their member state arts agencies. Primary funding comes from the National Endowment for the Arts and support from private contributors. For more information contact Labeth Nall, 870-972-2056
