Steel Bridge Team places second
in Deep South Regional Conference

April 20, 2006 -- For the seventh year in a row, Arkansas State University’s Steel Bridge Team will compete at the National Student Steel Bridge Competition on May 26-27 in Salt Lake City after receiving second place overall in the Deep South Regional Conference recently, in Memphis.

The Steel Bridge Team placed first in construction speed and economy. The team also placed second in stiffness, efficiency, lightness and aesthetics.

Lindsay Jenkins of Hot Springs placed second in the Mead Paper competition. This contest consisted of an essay and PowerPoint presentation discussing risk management and engineering.

The Concrete Canoe Team received third place over all. They also received third place in the men’s sprints, men’s endurance and the co-ed race.

"I was pleased with the results of the competition. Our students earned awards in eight of the 16 categories. Our teams worked hard and well together and we are looking forward to nationals," said faculty advisor Dr. Tom Parsons, director of civil and agricultural engineering.

The students competed against 12 universities in the south including: Christian Brothers University, Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, McNeese State University, Mississippi State University, Southern University and A&M College, Tulane University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, University of New Orleans, University of Memphis, University of Mississippi and University of Tennessee at Martin. All conference fees for universities affected by the hurricanes were paid by funds raised by the Western Tennessee Section of ASCE.
