Black History Month kicks off next
week with daily activities

Jan. 19, 2006 -- From “Soul Food Day,” and “Black Star Power Movies” to parades and rallies, pageants, concerts and an “All Black Affair,” the campus at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro will be busy in February during Black History Month.

In addition to all the fun and festive activities, Black History Month will also include forums, monologues, competitions and health screenings, along with numerous lectures and speakers.

“Black History Month is going to be great,” said Jerrod Lockhart, assistant dean of students in the Tribal Leadership Center.

“The Black History Month Committee has been busy for months planning and preparing for a great schedule. Our first event will be a tribute to Carter G. Woodson, who founded what eventually evolved into Black History Month,” he said.
The theme for Black History Month 2006 will be “Still Climbing … Life Ain’t Been No Crystal Stair.”
Ms. Deborah Mathis
The highlight of the month will be the Black History Month Lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium featuring Ms. Deborah Mathis, author of “Yet a Stranger: Why Black Americans Still Don’t Feel at Home.” Mathis, currently a professor at the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, Washington D.C. program, is a former news anchor for the Little Rock television station KATV.
For more details, contact Jerrod Lockhart at 870-972-2055 or via email at jlockhar@astate.edu.
