ASU celebrates Black History Month 2009 with series of events

Feb. 5, 2009 -- ASU celebrates Black History Month 2009, "United for Change," with a variety of events. For more information, contact Kimberley Johnson, assistant dean of students, at (870) 972-2055.

Black History Month 2009 events:

February 4 and 6:  Black History Month Film Series features “The Great Debaters” at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium

February 6
:  Last day for the Black Student Association Art Exhibit in the Student Union Center Court. At the ASU Museum, see 100 Years of African American Art, one of the ASU Museum's Traveling Suitcase exhibits, is still up in the ASU Museum main gallery. These reproductions of important paintings from collections throughout the United States represent work from African American artists spanning 1851–1967. The ASU Museum Traveling Suitcase Exhibit program includes nine exhibits from science, history, and the humanities that are offered to regional schools at no charge. A second online exhibit, Wearing What Cannot Be Spoken, is the exhibition of Kanga, a cloth printed with pattern and proverbs that is worn by women in East Africa. This exhibit was the result of Heritage Studies PhD student Rose Ong’oa’s research into the history and use of the garment as a method of communication in a society where women cannot speak freely. The exhibit includes an audio introduction in English and Swahili and it is the museum's hope that women in East Africa will know that their voices have been heard. For details, contact Lenore Shoults, ext. 2074, or visit the ASU Museum Web site.
