College of Agriculture to host
North Delta Ag Expo 2007

Jan. 25, 2007--The North Delta Ag Expo 2007 will be held February 8-9, 2007 at the Craighead County Fairgrounds. Hours for the expo are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Approximately 50 exhibitors are expected, according to Dr. Greg Phillips, dean of the Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, and Mathematics and Sciences. Phillips says, “This event is a new version of the annual Farm Expo that has been held in Jonesboro for over 20 years, but with new management and new partnerships.”

Cache River Valley Seed is the presenting sponsor of the expo. Major partners sponsoring the educational programming are the ASU College of Agriculture, the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, the Craighead County Farm Bureau, and the Arkansas Farm Bureau. Gene Martin of the Arkansas Farm Bureau will present a market outlook on the 2007 rice, cotton, and soybean crops. Dr. Nathan Slaton, U of A Extension Soil Scientist, will present the uses and benefits of using poultry litter in east Arkansas row crop production. U of A Extension scientists will present training sessions for restricted pesticide use applicators. In addition, the expo has been approved to offer up to six credit hours for continuing professional education and to those seeking Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Two of these three programs will be offered each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon (the pesticide training will be repeated).  The goal is to combine a traditional farm expo with educational programs and providing a showcase for new agri-technologies.

Student club members from the ASU College of Agriculture will staff the concession stand, with all profits going to benefit those student clubs. A portion of the North Delta Ag Expo proceeds will also be donated to the ASU College of Agriculture to support enhancements of the educational and research training programs offered to students.
