Student Affairs to host Arkansas College Personnel Association 2008 fall conference

Oct. 28, 2008 -- The Office of Student Affairs at Arkansas State University is hosting the 2008 fall conference of the Arkansas College Personnel Association (ACPA), Thursday and Friday, Nov. 13-14 at the Convocation Center and Student Union on the ASU campus. The conference is entitled “Campus Sustainability: Student Affairs Embracing the Future.”

“This is a great opportunity for ASU and the Jonesboro community to have the Arkansas College Personnel Association's annual conference at ASU,” said Dr. Lonnie Williams, associate vice chancellor of Student Affairs.  “It has been more than 20 years since the conference has been at ASU.”

Keynote speakers include Dr. Jim Purcell, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education; Dr. Ed Franklin, executive director of the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges (AATYC); and Dr. Michael Cuyjet, associate dean of the graduate school and an associate professor in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville.

“To have a nationally known speaker and author like Dr. Michael Cuyjet on our campus along with Dr. Jim Purcell, director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, and Dr. Ed Franklin, the executive director of the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges, speaks to the quality of the conference along with presenters from institutions within the state.  This is a rare opportunity for professional development coming to our campus.”

Discussion topics include the future of higher education by Dr. Purcell, black men in higher education by Dr. Cuyjet, and making the transition from two-year to four-year institutions by Dr. Franklin. There are also scheduled panel discussions entitled, “First response to campus calamities: A panel discussion about critical incident management” and “Legal issues.”

Registration fees are $150 for ACPA members, $175 for non-members, and $60 for students. Checks are payable to Arkansas College Personnel Association. The conference hotel is the Holiday Inn Express, 2407 Phillips Drive, Jonesboro, Ark. 72401, (870) 932-5554.

The ACPA is an organization designed for those persons involved in college personnel services and its administration. It provided opportunities for professional growth and emerging issues and promotes professional standards among student affairs and administrative personnel.
