ASU PR students dominate in state Prism Awards competition Public Relations students from Arkansas State University swept this year’s Student Prism Awards as they were handed out in four different categories during the Arkansas Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America’s annual event held in Little Rock on March 23. The Prism Award is given each year for outstanding Public Relations work in several categories. Christi Crawford of Jonesboro won three awards in three categories: Special Events for her entry regarding Team Fest 2003; a brochure created for the Jonesboro Department of Parks & Recreation in the Publications category; and a Rotary Centennial Park brochure for the Jonesboro Rotary Club in the special Purpose One-Time Publication category. ASU was also named a winner in the Group Communications Campaign category for its C-A-R-T (Community Area Regional Transit) campaign created for the City of Jonesboro/Greater Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce. The project, part of their Case Studies & Campaigns class directed by Dr. Gil Fowler, was a team effort. Members of the project team were Audra Higgins Malone of Jonesboro, Kasey Alexander of Jonesboro, Hillary Bird of Sikeston, Mo., Kimberly Carpenter of West Memphis, Alison Deiter of Germantown, Tenn., Brooksie Felty of Paragould, Elizabeth Fiala of Jonesboro, Erin Hill of Blytheville, Heather Rose of Bono, Samantha Schuk of Lake Village, Phillip Sterling of Little Rock and Malina Tabor of McGehee. Student entries were judged on the same criteria used for professional entries and a certain score had to be obtained for an award to be made. This is the first year that honors were given for outstanding work done by students from Arkansas colleges and universities and ASU won in all categories awarded. Dr. Gil Fowler, ASU professor of journalism and public relations, said “This recognition by professionals in the field of public relations attests to the quality of program that we have at ASU and the dedication that students put to their work.” ASU’s College of Communication combines a liberal arts and sciences background with professional preparation and is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC).
