Former NASA mission specialist
to speak at ASU: Capt. Winston Scott

Former NASA mission specialist Capt. Winston Scott will speak at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m.

Capt. Scott’s presentation is part of the ASU Lecture~Concert Series and will take place in Riceland Hall of the Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive on the ASU campus. It is free and open to the public.

Capt. Scott was a mission specialist on the 1996 STS-72 Endeavour shuttle flight which demonstrated and evaluated techniques used in the construction of the International Space Station. He flew on the Columbia in a 1997 mission, which accomplished a number of difficult assignments including the manual capture of a Spartan satellite.

Recently retired from NASA, his work in space is now regarded as a case study in leadership and expert communication, qualities most clearly exhibited in the much-publicized manual capture of the Spartan satellite.

At the lecture podium, Capt. Scott captures the audience with breathtaking actual footage from space as he takes people on a journey to places few will ever see.

In addition to his years of NASA experience, Capt. Scott has served as an associate dean and faculty member of the College of Engineering at Florida State University where he taught mechanical engineering.

Before his service at NASA, he compiled a distinguished record of service in the U.S. Navy where he served as a production test pilot in a variety of technical areas. He accumulated more than 4,000 hours of flight time and 200 shipboard landings while serving in the U.S. Navy.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Florida State and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. He has recently accepted the position of executive director of the Florida Space Authority.

This Lecture~Concert Series event is a joint presentation of the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium, the College of Sciences and Mathematics, and the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program.

ASU’s Lecture~Concert Series presents diverse programs to enrich the cultural life of the campus, community and region. The next Lecture~Concert Series event will be Andrew Patner presenting: “Does America Need an Arts Policy?” on Monday, March 22.
