ASU Museum exhibit features
'Originals!' by women artists

The Arkansas State University Museum has opened the exhibition "ORIGINALS! Arkansas Women Artists, 2004-2005."  The Arkansas State Committee of The National Museum of Women in the Arts sponsors the exhibition.  ORIGINALS! remains on exhibit in the main gallery through September 24.

Suzanne Weaver, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, served as juror for the exhibition.  Ms. Weaver states, “The salient characteristic of the majority of the selected works—from paintings to photographs and from still lifes to landscapes—is the manipulation of light and atmosphere.”  Each artist’s work had to express “conviction, commitment and clarity.”

Lemons Stacked, by Joanne JonesThe exhibition contains 32 works by 24 women artists from around the state, including the painting Leftovers by Sarah Elizabeth Miller from State University, Arkansas.  First prize was awarded to Joanne Jones, Fayetteville, for her oil painting Lemons Stacked.  Cynthia Kresse, Eureka Springs, won second prize and Deborah Warren, Hot Springs, received third prize.

The ORIGINALS! exhibition is open to the public.  ASU Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.  Admission is a $2 donation.  For more information call the museum at (870) 972-2074.
