MLK Week celebration planned on campus


     Arkansas State University has planned several festivities for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, a week long schedule of events titled “Near the Mountaintop – Making the Dream a Reality.”

     “
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week is a variety of events, here at ASU, that allows students to come together for a selfless worthwhile cause,” said Raven Harris, a sophomore radio-television major from Pine Bluff. Harris is the Student Government Association minority affairs director who also serves on the MLK Celebration planning committee.

     Beginning Thursday, Jan. 15, and continuing through Wednesday, Jan. 21, the celebration is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Student Activities Board (SAB), Student Government Association (SGA), Volunteer Opportunities Center, Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee, Alpha Phi Alpha, Black Student Association (BSA), Delta Sigma Theta and the NAACP.

Thursday, Jan. 15

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.     Black Student Association Birthday Cake, Reng Center

4 p.m.  Alpha Phi Alpha Unity March, beginning at Dean B. Ellis Library and Delta Sigma Theta Candlelight Vigil, Collegiate Park Clubhouse

Friday, Jan. 16

9:30 – 10:30 a.m.   Martin Luther King Jr. Brunch, Grand Hall in Fowler Center with speaker: Peggy Wright (Sponsored by SAB)
